Internship Options and Ideas
Wright-Locke Farm has several focus areas: Agriculture, Education, Events, Farm Kitchen, Outreach and Retail. Each department is directed by a senior staff member and is run slightly differently, however, none of the departments works alone. Each department welcomes creative, mission-driven internship experiences. The option to work interdepartmentally is always available. The space is also available for other innovative opportunities.
Agriculture – sustainable agriculture; environmental justice, food access, Farmer’s Market; small, diversified organic farming; agroforestry; animal husbandry
Education – Youth afterschool programs (PreK – 5th Grade), Toddler Programming, Summer farm education; Forest Friends preschool/kindergarten teaching intern; community accessibility; Indigenous Peoples and land history research; outdoor education; Adult and Family Programming; agroforestry; Enrichment and Field Trips, gardening with children and families.
Events – hospitality internship; marketing & design (social media & web design), community outreach, non-profit event planning, combined passion for sustainability in events (recycling, reducing plastic usage)
Farm Kitchen – seasonal cooking; nutrition; farm-to-table programming; health and wellness; food preparation, preservation, and waste; kids’ cooking classes.
Outreach – website and social media; newsletter; signage; photography (optimization of usable photos); development of communication and marketing strategies; community events (concerts, summer Family Farm Nights, senior programs, etc.)
Farm Retail – Farm to Go™ intern; marketing, social media presence; small business management; expansion of market-reach to vulnerable community members; recruitment of BIPOC and women-owned vendors
Outside of working within the farm departments, there are other internship opportunities from therapeutic horticulture to expressive arts therapy; from disrupting food systems and food insecurity to educational expansion. The space cultivates reflection and a personal connection with nature and the land. We always welcome new ideas!
Responsibilities
Depending upon your department and your internship, your specific responsibilities will vary and will be mutually agreed upon. Generally, some of the responsibilities will look similar:
- Professionally conducting yourself
- Keeping up with commitments and obligations
- Ability to respectfully communicate with colleagues
- We are OPEN TO ALL and welcome ALL visitors to the farm
- Being stewards of the farm
- Understanding the importance of mission-based work
- Willingness to become involved in the evolution of our culture as thought-leaders
Qualifications
Although internships may vary, the qualifications will be similar:
- Currently enrolled as a high school or college undergraduate or graduate student in agriculture, human services, social work, sustainability, counseling, education, or a degree program relevant to your field of interest
- Continued progress towards academic program requirements and responsibilities
- Facilitating appropriate documentation of internship
- Communicating with your WLFC supervisor about credit/course responsibilities
- Desire to work with a team of dedicated individuals
- Willingness to pitch-in to help in a space not entirely related to your field of study on an as-needed basis
- Strong organizational skills and multitasking abilities
- Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing)
- Creative, intentional and innovative in every aspect of your work with WLFC

*Most internship positions require that you have access to your own transportation as public transportation can be difficult to access, but is not impossible. The 67 bus stops nearby but will require extra time during rush hour.
*WLFC cannot provide housing for interns.
*WLFC can work with most institutions to support credit-bearing internships. Internship stipends can also be made available.
